Mission & Vision
Founded in 1897, the National League of American Pen Women is the oldest women’s arts organization in America.  The League, recognized for its support and creation of art, music, and letters, is comprised of professional women artists, writers, poets, composers and arrangers.
The mission of the League, a not-for-profit 501©(3) corporation, is to encourage, recognize, and promote the production of creative work of professional standard in Art, Letters, and Music, and through outreach activities provide educational, creative, and professional support to members and non-members in these disciplines.The core values of the NLAPW are respect, knowledge, creation and preservation of the arts.

The following are some of the benefits of membership:

  • Luncheon meetings are held monthly from October thru May on the third Tuesday of the month. Each meeting includes an informative program, with a variety of educational or inspirational speakers.
  • Painted Sounds a program created through the collaboration of writers and artists
  • Networking with local and national members in a spirit of mutual support, camaraderie, and personal and collective advancement.
  • Competitions and awards are available through national membership.
  • The Pen Woman is a magazine published by our national office and distributed at no additional cost to Active and Associate members. Members are welcome to contribute to its content.
  • Biennial Conventions, held in even-numbered years, rotate between Washington DC and other cities across the country. Traditional elements of the conference include a major art competition and exhibit, as well as competitions for writing and music awards, all of which entail national recognition for the winners.
